Posted on by Just Diggers Newsdesk
Manchester City Council's Executive have announced that they have approved proposals that aim to develop Whitworth Street West. The plans have been hailed as "ambitious" and will revolutionise the area in a manner that has been deemed "consistent with other city centre development initiatives."

The proposals include:
  • enhancing the city's southern gateway
  • new buildings with strong architectural design
  • high quality, high density developments
  • improved access to and through the area
  • up-grade public transport facilities
  • environmental improvements
  • an affordable hotel to complement existing hotels in the vicinity of Manchester Central
  • increasing the residential population
  • new retail, bars and restaurants
  • connecting to other major southern city centre developments including First Street
Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council said "Even in the current economic climate we need to keep Manchester moving forward and build the base for long-term growth. Creating places for medium and long term investment is one of the Council's key roles and demonstrates confidence in the future of the City. Expanding the traditional city centre southwards is vital if we are to continue to drive forward the City region's economy over the next decade and beyond. These proposals will help us achieve this by delivering modern, sustainable and economically competitive plans that will promote the seamless expansion of the centre."
