Workers who are currently under crisis at JCB have voted to accept a cut in working hours. This move will save more than 300 jobs at the battered digger manufacturer.

Staff have agreed to start a four day work week for a minimum of six months, however there will still be a few redundancies, 178 in total.

JCB employs around 5,000 workers in Staffordshire. They announced cutbacks just days after they had already cut 436 staff after sales had dropped dramatically due to the suffering construction industry.

A JCB spokesman said "Short time working was JCB’s preferred option and we are pleased that GMB members have voted for this course of action, particularly as it will lead to a reduced number of redundancies and preserve our skills base for when the markets improve. Following the ballot result, short time working will commence at JCB’s UK production facilities at the beginning of November for a minimum of six months."

Union convener Gordon Richardson said "The joint shop stewards’ committee are pleased with the outcome because it will help safeguard around 350 of our colleagues’ jobs."
